This fort is built close to the Chandragiri River, also known as Payaswini River. The Chandragiri River marked the border or boundary between the Tulanadu and the Kolathanadu Kingdoms resulting in a beautiful blend of rich culture and tradition among the people in the area.

Hello friends. I visited Chandragiri fort in the morning today. This fort is located on the banks of Chandragiri river. It is about 150 feet above sea level and has an area of around 7 acres in a square form. When renovation was done, only the broken portions were fixed using cement and mortar. Look at the stones in this portion. These stones are very strong and huge in comparison to the laterite stones we see nowadays. It is believed that a shrine for Lord Hanuman was situated here on this mount. We have seen a similar shrine in Bekal Fort as well.
In the olden days when kings ruled over the land, this fort served as a boundary between Tulanadu and the Kolathanadu Kingdoms.
The same ruler who built the Bekal fort, Shivappa Nayaka is the one who built this fort. Eventually, this fort came into the hands of the British East India Company. Now this is under the Archeological department of Kerala.
I feel the number of visitors to this fort is a lot less as of now. Some renovation activities took place here a few years back. The watchman at the place said that the re-opening of the fort was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.

Even if not as huge as Bekal Fort, this fort has a lot of historical significance. The fort is beautiful to see too. If possible, all of you should come visit this fort once. Melparamba town is located around 5 kms from Kasaragod town and this fort is located about half a kilometre from Melparamba. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shastha under the Malabar Dewaswom board located close to this fort.

If we look out from here, we can see the vast Chandragiri river and the portion where the Chandragiri river meets the Arabian sea, Thalangara harbour, the famous Malik Deenar Mosque, railway tracks and coconut tree plantations. We can see upto a long distance from this spot. The ability to see such far distances could be the reason why rulers made forts like these in such locations so that they can see enemies closing in from a distance and get prepared for a counter-attack or war.

The fort is open from 9:00 am in the morning to 5:00 pm in the evening.
