In 2020, Japan´s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism established the Japan Blue Economy Association to develop J-Blue Credits, the world´s first state-approved, voluntary, nature-based credit mechanism designed to fund important blue carbon ecosystem restoration initiatives. Five years in, the carbon, biodiversity and community-centric nature credit continues to be a pioneering case study for coastal nations who wish to catalyze private sector innovation and funding of ocean restoration initiatives, including wild seaweed forests and farmed seaweed operations.
