How many lives are lost because ambulances don’t reach on time? How many times the conventional methods fail when you need health support in an emergency? Do we give ambulances a pass when we’re driving on the road? How many times have you seen ambulances getting stuck in traffic jams?
We get groceries, cosmetics, and all other things in 10 minutes. And that is okay. But why don't we have the same speed when it comes to building a quick emergency response system for health? Yesterday I posted a snippet from my conversation with Dial 4242 cofounder Jeetendra Lalwani on the same.
Key questions I asked were:
What does it take to build an ambulance service that is available to people in the shortest time possible?
What are the gaps in the conventional system? Shouldn't existing large health firms be providing the same?
Can a startup or business make money from quick ambulance services? What are the ethical considerations and models for doing so?
While it's relatively easy to get an ambulance in an urban city, how can the same level of service be provided in smaller towns, cities, or villages?
Lalwani gave an honest walkthrough of the ecosystem. He explains:
The ambulance industry in India is disorganized and unregulated, leading to high costs and delayed emergency care.
Many lives are lost due to the unavailability of timely ambulance services, especially in cases of accidents and heart attacks.
Building a successful ambulance network requires technology, a large pool of ambulances, and a dedicated team with grit, determination, and passion.
It also requires significant capital investment for ambulances, salaries, and technology infrastructure.
Startups can monetize ambulance services by partnering with insurance companies, CSR initiatives, and creating awareness about the importance of ambulances.
The government, private companies, and startups need to work together to improve ambulance services, especially in rural areas where awareness and accessibility are major challenges.
Affordability, accessibility, and awareness are crucial factors in making ambulance services successful in India.
