In the Midrash Shir HaShirim Rabbah on the verse 'The thousand are for you, Solomon, and two hundred for those who guard its fruit' – Rabbi Chiya son of Rabbi Abba said: One who studies Torah in pain receives a thousand[coins as reward], and without pain receives two hundred. Rabbi Yudan in the name of Rabbi Bun said: One who studies Torah not in his usual place receives a reward of a thousand, and in his place receives two hundred. Wondrous words: not in his place - a thousand; in his place - two hundred.
For over two years now, yeshiva students have been studying Torah in pain, as the authorities restrict their steps, and thus more pain was added to many yeshiva students who are forced to study Torah not in their usual place; this is great pain.
On the other hand, for over two years, the nation dwelling in Zion has been in a state of war. The dangers are immense, and the fears are heavy, but the Guardian of Israel protects the remnant of Israel, and all the salvation of God's nation is miraculous, not natural at all, and we believe and trust that the Torah is what protects and saves.
We have no prophet, and we do not understand the Creator's ways, but we must know that the dangers are very great and we need the great merits of Torah study much more than in normal times. And one who studies Torah in pain receives a thousand - five times more than studying without pain.
All of us, the yeshiva students, all who study Torah are the crown of creation. We sustain the world. Our Torah study protects the people of Israel, protects and saves in the most literal sense. Therefore, we must fulfill our duty with even greater strength, to study and study and study again...
This is our role, this is our duty, this is our privilege, and only this way will we save the people of Israel and protect them from all the enemies. Along with this, we must increase our prayers with intention... and it is said in the name of the Chazon Ish zt"l that in times of calamity, saying the Psalm 'Yoshev B'Seter' (Psalm 91) is very capable of bringing protection.
Of course, we must strengthen our faith and trust that everything that happens is from the Blessed God...
Along with this, there is a duty of effort, and there are laws of saving lives (Pikuach Nefesh). We must be very, very strict with the guidelines, not to be lenient with this. This is a Torah obligation of 'You shall guard your lives exceedingly,' and it is said in the name of Maran the Rav of Brisk zt"l that through fulfilling the obligation of 'guarding', the Holy One, Blessed be He, brings salvation.
And another important thing: to maintain calm, tranquility, and a good atmosphere. The advice for this is to take as little interest as possible in what is happening. What we know anyway is enough; there is no need to search for more and more information. It is unnecessary, and it also causes unnecessary fear and anxiety.
Next week begins 'Bein HaZmanim' (the intersession). During Bein HaZmanim, there is no exemption from studying Torah... One must also use the opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of honoring one's father and mother, and to help at home when help is needed.
May it be His will that God pours mercy upon His nation Israel, and saves us from all calamities and evil decrees, and may we sit in the tent of Torah all our days without any interruptions, and may He redeem us with an everlasting redemption speedily in our days, Amen.
