In this video we're going to talk about how I made my first NFT, how much money I made from my first NFT and I give you some tips on selling your NFTs based on my experience and what I have learned.
1. WHAT IS AN NFT? WHY ARE THEY ON THE BLOCKCHAIN?
The reason why NFTs are a cool new form of art is because they are stored on the blockchain. The blockchain is a long list of records containing all the verified and unmodifiable transactions that have ever happened in that ecosystem. This is nice because you don't need banks to keep track of users, but instead it's us, the users having a copy of the transaction history to verify balances and transactions when someone sends money to someone else. All of this is public, and the users are represented by wallet addresses (much like bank account numbers).
What are NFTs? NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token, which essentially means that they cannot be replaced because they are distinguished and only a certain amount of them exist, usually 1. NFTs can take any form, they can be collectibles, artworks, even membership passes. Each item will have their own line of code on the blockchain, so it's tracable and identifiable. Why don't you just download NFTs? You certainly can, but it's like photographing the Mona Lisa. Everyone can do that, but there will always be only 1 owner.
2. WHAT IS MY FIRST NFT
I tend to call my NFT an NFT Artwork as it's not the usual, generative NFT that you probably see everywhere. I spent about 60 hours creating it, based on a childhood memory. It's a recreation of a legendary tennis moment in sports history from the 2012 Australian Open, Men's Singles Finals between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, ranked #1 and #2 in the world, respectively at the time. The other interesting aspect about this artwork is that the actual size is smaller than a cent/penny coin. The match lasted 5 hours and 53 minutes which is a record. I also drew and animated the last point of the match! You can look up the original broadcast and compare it!
3. HOW MUCH MONEY I MADE FROM MY FIRST NFT?
I'm happy to tell you that nothing happened and I made $0 from it. I want to keep it real on this channel sharing both the positives and the negatives of what we do together and this is a great learning opportunity to help you do it better than I did.
4. TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR FIRST NFT
1) Selling NFTs is a marketing game. If you have an established audience because you are a content creator or artist with a following of thousands or tens of thousands, selling your NFT will be much easier once you teach your audience how to buy it and why it's cool to own it this way. That's because if you are new, it's really hard to stand out and get featured and eventually you will just get lost in the ocean of NFTs that are released every day.
2) Consider where you publish your NFT. I published mine on OpenSea, using the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is the most popular network for NFTs, but being an older network it cannot handle the current traffic so transaction fees are super high and are not sustainable or good for beginners. An alternative is Polygon which is like Ethereum, but the users are fewer. Another one that is popular is Solana, which can handle way more transactions than Ethereum, meaning way lower transaction fees which helps the NFT ecosystem.
3) Consider what type of NFT you create. The most popular approach are collections housing a set number of NFTs, which are similar in theme but vary in traits. These usually appeal to and draw in a wider audience so it's that much easier to resell. My NFT is more subjective as it is focused on a certain set of topics. I would have a harder time finding a buyer who resonates with my topic and sees the value in the artwork. It's also easier to build a community around a collection. If you are making 1/1 artworks, look at sites that are dedicated to novel artworks where you compete only with artwork.
