The Mackworth estate main shopping centre on Prince Charles Avenue officially opened at 3pm on Thursday April 23rd 1959.
Prince Charles Avenue is a main road that cuts through the estate dividing the eastern and western halves and has a very popular range of shops.
In 2025 you will find the following in this shopping area - Mackworth Community library, Co-op community store, Pizza Cottage, Dean & Smedley family pharmacy, Mackworth news, Hair Do, Birds Bakery, Post Office, Mackworth Hardware, Daisy chain Benevolent Fun Trust charity shop, Betfred, Greggs, Booze Buster, Britannia Fishbar.
People travel from miles around to come here due to such a good range of shops all in one place, in fact
its so popular that in 2016 they decided to build a new small car park opposite the shopping area in a section of the public open space on the other side of Prince Charles Avenue along with a new crossing to allow shoppers to cross safely.
Mackworth has a lot of greenery with trees, 120 of which were donated by Derby Rotary club. The first properties on the estate were occupied by 1951, by 1959 2507 of the new homes were occupied, Most of these homes were built by Wimpy.

Trolleybuses stopped running in Mackworth, Derby on September 9, 1967. The Derby trolleybus system, which included Mackworth, operated from 1932 until its closure.
On the right of the new photo you can see Mackworth Memorial Sculpture to Conflict.
This memorial was consecrated on Saturday 6th October 2018 by Rt Rev's Jan McFarlane, Bishop of Repton and acting Bishop of Derby.
The monument cost £18,000 to build and was funded by section 106 contributions from the sale of the former Derby College site and the Radbourne Lane development - rather than taxpayer cash
It was designed with the help of local school children in 2015.
The structure is made from Weathering steel (Core Ten) which is a hard wearing material used in the construction of tanks in WWII, contemporary landscaping and sculptures and memorials such as the “Angel of the North”. Weathering steel (Core-Ten) is low maintenance long lasting and once fully oxidised will colour from golden brown to a deep purple brown over time. The sculpture will also contain a stone carved frieze based on the actual carving workshops from three local schools and their understanding of peace and conflict.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime I'm publishing then on my YouTube channel like this one.
