For nearly two decades, these beautiful old farm buildings have been at the heart of our sanctuary life — housing our Friesian horses, as well as everything that keeps the yard running day to day… their wardrobe, their feed room kitchen, and all the essential equipment we rely on.

So beginning this restoration is a huge change for everyone here at the farm… and now, thanks to our Guardian Angel Lindsay, the work is finally underway to make them safe for the future. Its completely necessary, because these historic barns have become structurally dangerous and must be made safe again.

Welcome to Episode 1 of our brand new restoration series: Saving Greenbank’s 300-Year-Old Barn 🏚️🛠️

At Greenbank, we’re home to remarkable Grade II listed bank barns that have stood for over three centuries — built right into the hillside and shaped by the landscape itself. This traditional style of barn is a brilliant example of how farmers once worked with the land rather than against it.

But after 300 years of weather, wear, and countless past repairs, the barns themselves have reached a critical point… and now the restoration must begin.

In this first video, Tamara takes you inside the barn to explore:

✨ What a traditional bank barn is (and why it’s so clever)
🏔️ How the barn was built into the hill with access to both levels
🐄 How the lower floor once housed cattle, with feed dropped down from above
🌾 How the upper floor was used to store hay and grain
🧱 The thick stone walls that helped it survive for generations
🔨 Signs of repairs, changes, and additions made over the centuries

This is the beginning of a full restoration journey, and we’ll be sharing the process step by step in future episodes — from uncovering the barn’s history to the hard work of making it safe and secure for the future.
