TOMTalks shows you how to fix the trunk lock actuator on his 2007 Lexus LS 460. I fixed my trunk lock actuator by replacing the actuator with a refurbished trunk lock actuator from eBay. One day after coming home from the grocery store my trunk would not close or lock, instead the actuator just kept cycling. To get the trunk to lock, I actually had to hit the button and then manually close the trunk to the point just before it latches and then and have someone else disconnect the negative battery terminal at the point in the cycle when the trunk lock actuator was in the right position. This was a temporary fix to keep the trunk locked until my refurbished trunk lock actuator arrived. Thank you to the folks who made Youtube videos and in the Lexus forums for suggesting this method to get the trunk to close when the actuator is broken---I really appreciate it! This worked to keep my trunk closed until my refurbished actuator arrived. However with this method the only way to open the trunk was to use the skeleton key, and then if you opened it, I was unable to lock it again, unless I repeated the process with closing the trunk and disconnecting the battery while the actuator was in the right position as discussed above.
Thanks to everyone on the Lexus forums and the other youtubers who created videos on this topic and who provided so many useful tips and suggestions on how to attempt this repair. As many of you suggested, the hardest part of replacing the actuator, was getting the carpet trunk liner detached from the trunk, before I was able to get to the trunk lock actuator. Once I got the carpet pulled back, it was fairly easy to see the trunk lock actuator as it is right there, and there are only three bolts holding it on. The removal tool provided by Actuators Plus on eBay was super helpful to me as I tried to detach the carpet liner. One of the hardest parts is getting the plastic piece around the emergency trunk release off without breaking the plastic. Thankfully I got it off and in this video, I try to show you where the clips are on this piece. Once you get it off you can see where it snaps in, but when it is in the trunk, you cannot see so it feels like you might break the plastic trying to get it off. Thankfully I was able to get this piece off without breaking it.
After removing the carpet liner, I replaced the trunk lock actuator with the refurbished trunk lock actuator I purchased on eBay. Thankfully after replacing the actuator, my trunk started working again! I think it was a fracture in the small plastic piece I show you in the video. If you have tips or suggestions on how to replace the trunk lock actuator, please leave them in the comments to help others! I really appreciate all the folks who have made YouTube videos on this topic, as it really helped me to watch those videos before attempting this repair to my 2007 Lexus LS 460. I hope this is helpful to you as well!
