​Standing by the river at dusk,
The water says nothing,
Yet I prick up my ears, waiting for its sound.
​Between one person and another,
The thing that lies down before any word
Is a single, thin sheet of silence.
​The day you turned away,
I could not hold on to you;
I only kept fumbling inside my pockets.
​Longing is
Like a bridge that failed to cross the river,
Hanging suspended, swaying in the void.
At the end of that swaying,
I finally behold
My own elongated shadow.
​The silence that is you
Is starlight slow to answer.
​The night sky is in no hurry,
But was it only I who turned my back first?
If only I had stood there a little longer,
The water would have cleared on its own.
​Losing a person
Is not about missing them,
But about losing myself, who failed to wait.
​Today, I lay a single stone by the river
And transcribe your silence
As if it were my very breath.

그대란 침묵

저녁 강가에 서면
물은 아무 말도 하지 않는데
나는 그 물소리를 기다리며 귀를 쫑긋거린다

사람과 사람 사이에서
말보다 먼저 눕는 것은
얇은 침묵 한 장

그대가 돌아서던 날
나는 붙잡지 못하고
주머니 속만 만지작거렸다

기다림은
강을 다 건너지 못한 다리처럼
허공에 매달려 흔들리고
그 흔들림 끝에서
나는 비로소
늘어진 그림자를 본다

그대란 침묵은
대답이 늦는 별빛

밤하늘은 서두르지 않는데
나만 먼저 등을 돌린걸까
조금만 더 서 있었더라면
물은 스스로 맑아졌을 텐데

사람을 잃는 일은
사람을 놓치는 일이 아니라
기다리지 못한 나 자신을 잃는 일

오늘은 강가에 돌 하나 내려놓고
그대의 침묵을
내 숨처럼 받아 적는다
