The Coalbrookdale Fountain was removed from the park in 1921, but summer 2013 saw a brand new replica take pride of place in the park, as part of the restoration work.
Painstakingly made to original plans by local artisans, the fountain there today is a faithful reproduction of the original. The Pulham water feature, complete with waterfall, was also restored back to its former glory.
Generations of locals have visited the park to rub the ‘lucky foot’ of the Sir Francis Sharpe Powell monument. As a result, a hole appeared in his shoe! Sir Francis’s shoes were made watertight once again and re-bronzed.
The pavilion building, a focal point of the park, now offers a cafe facility run by Frederick’s Ice Cream. The Dalton steps leading up to the pavilion were repaired and the missing urns replaced.
Music lovers can now enjoy concerts in the band stand and a new power supply brought it into the twenty first century.
The restoration involved several organisations, including Wigan Council, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, and the Friends of Mesnes Park.
