This is the fourth in a series of seven web seminars that explore the Next Generation Science Standards. Presenters Heidi Schweingruber, from the National Research Council; Deborah Smith, from Penn State University; and Jessica Jeffries, from State College Area School District, apply the science and engineering practices described in A Framework for K–12 Science Education in elementary-level classrooms and discuss strategies for engaging students. Dr. Schweingruber describes young students’ competence for scientific thinking, emphasizing the importance of effective instruction that supports learning over time. Dr. Smith and Ms. Jeffries share valuable examples--both results and obstacles--from Ms. Jeffries’ former kindergarten classroom to show how the practices actually work in that setting.
