The Finnish architect Ilmari Tapiovaara designed his high-back chair ‘Mademoiselle’ for the Swedish company Edsbyverken back in 1956. We recently bought one of these, together with two chairs produced by Nässjö Stolfabrik. This illustrates the fact that the two companies “borrowed” models from each other. Quite similar, wouldn’t you say?
Nässjö Stolfabrik was founded in the Swedish town of Nässjö in 1870 and grew to become one of the largest furniture manufacturers in Scandinavia. The company went bankrupt in 1992. The competitor Edsbyverken was founded in 1899 in the town of Edsbyn, and produced furniture as well as wooden skis. The company still exists, but nowadays the production consists entirely of furniture fir public spaces.
