Anti-smuggling plane crashes in Malta, five killed
France's Defense Ministry says five officials and contractors were killed when a small plane crashed during take off in Malta, with Maltese officials saying the plane was headed for an anti-smuggling reconnaissance mission over Libya. Mana Rabiee reports.
France's government says all five people who died in the crash were on an anti-smuggling surveillence mission.
Three of the victims were French Defense Ministry officials and two others were private contractors.
Their twin-engine aircraft crashed during take off from Malta's main airport Monday morning.
Airport officials say it was headed to the Libyan city of Misrata.
The flight was reportedly part of a customs operation that France has been conducting for five months, tracking human trafficking and drugs smuggling.
