In this Video Session, We are covering Terrestrial Solar Radiation.

The heat received by the earth is called solar radiation (or) insolation

The heat energy reflected, absorbed and radiated back into the space equals the energy received by earth. This is known as Heat budget

• When 100% solar radiation reaches the earth’s atmosphere 35% is reflected back to space by clouds, water bodies and ice covered areas. This is known as Albedo.
• Of remaining 65%, 14% are absorbed by the atmosphere and 51% (34% - direct solar radiation, 17% - scattered radiation) are absorbed by earth’s surface.

Some terminologies:

Beam radiation (or) Direct radiation: Solar radiation received on the earth surface with out change in direction.

Diffuse radiation: The radiation received on a terrestrial surface (scattered by aerosols and dust) from all parts of sky dome)

Global radiation = Beam radiation + Diffuse radiation

Sun at zenith: It is the position of the sun directly over head.

Air Mass: Ratio of the path length of beam radiation through the atmosphere to the path length if the sun is at zenith.

Irradiance (w/m^2): The rate of incident energy per unit area of a surface.

Albedo:The earth reflects back 35% of the total isolation. This is referred as albedo.
