When bass start transitioning from late winter into early spring, they begin moving shallow around grass, hard bottom, stumps, laydowns, and logs looking for easy meals. In this video, I break down my top 3 baits for targeting shallow transition bass in cold water conditions.
The key during this time of year is fishing slow and covering high-percentage shallow cover where bass stage before moving onto their spawning areas.
Here are the baits I’m using to trigger those bites:
🔹 Flat-Sided Crankbait
Berkley Frittside 5 Crankbait
This bait excels in cold water thanks to its tight balsa-style action, which is perfect when bass are sluggish. It dives about 2–5 feet, making it ideal for fishing shallow cover like rock, stumps, and hard bottom flats during the transition period.
🔹 Squarebill Crankbait
Berkley SquareBull Squarebill Crankbait
A squarebill is perfect for deflecting off cover like laydowns, logs, and shallow stumps. Bouncing this bait off cover often triggers reaction bites from bass staging shallow before the spawn.
🔹 Suspending Jerkbait
Berkley Stunna 100 Jerkbait
When fish are feeding on dying baitfish during the cold-water transition, a suspending jerkbait can be deadly. The pause mimics injured baitfish and often triggers big bites from bass cruising shallow cover.
🎯 Key Areas to Target
Shallow grass lines
Hard bottom flats
Stumps and laydowns
Shallow logs and isolated wood
Transition banks leading to spawning pockets
These areas hold fish as they move from deeper winter areas toward the bank when water temperatures begin warming into the late winter / early spring transition.
