Legs in bits! Today was supposed to be Zwift race day, but the "Hyrox Hangover" is real. After a brutal session yesterday involving 1,500m run efforts at a 4:30 pace, my DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) told me a flat-out race just wasn't in the cards.
In this video, I take you through my decision-making process as an age-group multisport athlete. Sometimes the smartest training move isn’t sticking to the plan—it’s listening to your body. I swap the high-intensity race for some active recovery, including a swim, some yoga, and a trip to the Zwift Climb Portal for two ascents of the Mûr-de-Bretagne.
It wasn't the fastest session, but it was exactly what the legs needed to keep the momentum going without burning out.
What’s covered in today’s vlog:
Managing DOMS after a heavy Hyrox session.
Why my "Body Battery" didn't match how I actually felt.
Active recovery: Yoga, walking, and swimming.
Tackling the Mûr-de-Bretagne in the Zwift Climb Portal.
00:00:00] Introduction: Richard explains the "Hyrox hangover" and the physical soreness (DOMS) he is feeling after a heavy training session.
[00:01:08] Training Context: Discussion of the previous day's workout, which included 1,500m run intervals at a 4:30 pace.
[00:01:53] The Dilemma: Weighing the options between sticking to a planned Zwift race or opting for an easier climb to accommodate his tired legs.
[00:02:14] Recovery Plan: Richard outlines his active recovery steps for the morning, including stretching, yoga, walking the dog, and a swim.
[00:03:41] Zwift Decision: After starting the afternoon session, Richard officially decides to swap the race for the Zwift Climb Portal.
[00:04:39] The Climb Begins: Entering the portal to tackle the Mûr-de-Bretagne climb.
[00:05:26] Second Lap: Feeling better once the legs are spinning, Richard decides to take on the climb for a second time.
[00:06:12] Session Wrap-up: Richard concludes the workout, noting that while it wasn't a race, the 30-minute climbing session was the right move for his recovery.
[00:06:46] Closing: Final thoughts and plans to attempt the Zwift race the following day.
