This is one of the recordings Hermann Scherchen made for the Westminster label in London in autumn 1954. The "Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra" was actually the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In Beethoven's symphonies, Scherchen began to adopt swift tempi close to the composer's metronome markings, which was unusual at that time. These are splendid performances which can, together with the renditions by René Leibowitz and Michael Gielen, be regarded as milestones of a modern understanding of Beethoven.
