Believe it or not, this dog was NOT taught the motivational fetch with any type of trade-up. He DOES have a mild resource-guarding tendency in very specific situations and his obedience is solid enough to be able to disengage him and MOVE HIM AWAY from the object with little issues.
He is treated the same as the 70-lb Rottweiler puppy. I know we joke about making small dogs fly across rooms when they become belligerent or outright aggressive, but it is more respectful and better in the long-term to just train the dog and not have to threaten such actions. Treat them like dogs and everything just falls into place!
