Power came from a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter Mezger flat-six engine, producing around 415 horsepower at 8,200 rpm. The engine was mated to a 6-speed sequential manual gearbox and sent power to the rear wheels. Thanks to extensive weight reduction measures, including a stripped interior, polycarbonate windows, and composite body panels, the car weighed approximately 1,150 kg. This gave it outstanding power-to-weight characteristics, along with the reliability expected of Porsche's motorsport engineering.

Visually and mechanically, the GT3 R was heavily upgraded over the road-going GT3. It featured a widened track, full roll cage, racing bucket seats, center-lock wheels, and an adjustable aero package including a large rear wing and aggressive front splitter. Suspension and braking systems were track-focused, with fully adjustable coilovers, reinforced components, and race-spec Brembo calipers for endurance durability. The body retained the 996’s teardrop headlights and overall silhouette but sat much lower and meaner on the tarmac.

The GT3 R proved immediately successful in competition. It dominated the GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the American Le Mans Series, and swept numerous FIA GT and national GT championships. It was particularly known for its balance, endurance performance, and ease of setup—traits that made it a favorite among both seasoned teams and amateur racers. It also laid the groundwork for a family of Porsche race cars that would evolve into the GT3 RS, RSR, and modern GT3 Cup lineage.

The 2001 Porsche 911 GT3 R is now recognized as a landmark car in Porsche’s motorsport history. It brought modern GT racing to a wider audience and helped define the brand’s trackside identity in the 21st century, proving that the 996 generation, despite its controversial styling, had serious racing credentials and enduring pedigree.
