Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterium that blocks the veins of olive trees where water and nutrients move, eventually causing the plant to dry up and die. The disease was first discovered in Italy in 2013 and has been ravaging the olive tree population in the southern region of Apulia since then. Organizations in Apulia teamed up for a programme of using dogs trained to detect the bacterium and thus, prevent its further spread.
The video documents how such an innovation helps save one of Italy’s economically and culturally important crop – the olive tree – and how protecting the health of an iconic commodity from Xylella fastidiosa helps protect its international trade, and prevents further spread of the pest to other regions and parts of Europe.
