WOW: Hochul Drops Two-Sentence Burn on Vance Over His Own Name History
JD Vance kept calling New York Governor Kathy Hochul by the wrong first name at a campaign rally this week, and her response turned into one of the sharpest comebacks of his vice presidency so far.
Vance was on Long Island stumping for GOP congressional hopeful Mike LiPetri when he took a swing at LiPetri's opponent, Rep. Thomas Suozzi, claiming Suozzi answers to the governor rather than his constituents. The only problem was that Vance referred to her as "Katie" Hochul, not once but twice in the same speech, according to Politico reporter Jason Beeferman, who caught the slip on social media.
Hochul's office didn't let it slide. Responding directly to Beeferman's post, the governor's account fired back with just two lines: it's still Kathy, and not everyone changes their name every year.
That second sentence was doing a lot of work. Vance has gone by several names over the course of his life. He was born James Donald Bowman, became James David Hamel after his mother remarried, and later took the surname Vance from the grandmother who helped raise him. He dropped the periods from his initials in 2021, right as he launched his political career.
The timing could not have been worse for the vice president. He was supposed to be using this stretch to promote his new memoir, but instead found himself fielding criticism over an awkward appearance on "The View" and pushback from members of his own party over the administration's handling of the Iran ceasefire. A two-sentence tweet from a Democratic governor he can't even get the name right for is just the latest entry on a rough week's list.
