This video, Teachers: What Do They Make? (1st October 2016), is a reminder to each and everyone of us the importance that teachers play in our lives. It is vital to remember that the term 'teacher' in this context is not strictly confined to school teachers. We often forget who our first teachers were…"our parents."

The great playwright George Bernard Shaw is often quoted as saying "those who can, do, and those who can't, teach." Based on this type of thinking people often ask "What do teachers make?" - so let me detail some of my own observations.

I believe "those who can, do, and do so only because they have been taught." We have all be taught in some form or another; be it our parents, siblings, friends, teachers, social media, television, radio, etc…

In the context of academics, you've probably heard teaching described as a noble profession; perhaps it should be considered as the noblest of professions. Good teachers are a guiding light. They shape our formative years, impart their knowledge and inspire aspiration.

India's foremost educationalist and social reformer Sathya Sai Baba once said:

"Of all the professions in the world, teaching is the noblest, the most difficult and the most important. The teacher should be an example to his pupils. If a teacher has as vice, thousands are polluted. If the teacher is dedicated and pure, thousands of children will be improved and the nation will gain from educated men and women of character."

The above quote by Sathya Sai Baba highlights the importance of being a teacher and the great responsibly that is presented before them. I firmly believe that a good teacher should be a teacher of character first then of subject.

The problem with teachers these days, are that some teachers like to teach the test; in a time where SATs are a common part of school life there often won't be the opportunity to do much else. They have to teach in this way because it's what they are told to do.

In my opinion that isn't where a teacher's real passion lies. Of course they want to educate, share knowledge and teach new things, but a teacher's real power and passion lies in allowing their pupils to become freethinkers.

Freethinkers aren't scared to be bold. They have an innate courage and they use it to guide them when they need to navigate the travails and travesties that life can often throw at us. Without freethinking, we wouldn't have Einstein's theory of relativity. Nor would we have any number of other fresh theories, discoveries or inventions.

Now that you understand the importance of freethinking, it is also important to consider what it means for our future generation. One day these pupils will become teachers themselves. It will be their responsibility to inspire, to encourage, to guide – and, yes, to innovate.

In short, the future of our nation will one day be in the hands of our children. They themselves will have to become good teachers.
And so what makes a good teacher? Well, they should have three key qualities:

1. They should be able to engage

2. Exhibit excellence

3. Strive to be ethical.

Let me elaborate.

• Good teachers have the ability to feel engaged and encourage engagement. They enjoy going to work and look forward to the experiences that lie ahead. They both care and love their students and want the best for them.

• Excellence means that they are well-informed. They have a good understanding of the subject and the material they teach, and they will understand how to teach it with passion.

• It is also essential, that a good teacher is ethical. They will often be faced with tough decisions and dilemmas. They'll strive to make all the right choices for your child's education as they known their future's depend on it. If they make a mistake, or the wrong decision, they'll learn from that mistake and do better next time.

The quote "To teach is to touch a life forever " sums the impact that teachers make to the lives of the people that they teach.
