The surfer squat is a great exercise to target glute activation and strengthening with an added challenge of keeping a stable stationary leg while rotating the moving leg back into the surfer stance.
With a band around the knees, start in a squat position and step back and out with one leg. Your feet should end up being perpendicular to each other with the stationary knee and foot pointing forward and the moving leg pointing out at 90 deg.
From the side view you can see we’re really focusing on keeping tension in the band, avoiding the key compensation of letting the knees cave in, or what we call knee valgus.
