The ARB Differential Breather allows venting of air pressure in the differential. Many 4x4 vehicles have a venting check valve already, but the problem arises when stream crossing. The rapid cooling due to the cold water can create a vacuum, which sucks the valve shut and causes air to be forced into the differential through the axle/shaft seals. This can suck water into the drivetrain and mix with oil, possibly damaging the drivetrain.
