Temperatures in the Northeast United States have dropped to minus 46 degrees Celsius caused by an Arctic blast.
The majority of New York and all six New England states – which are home to 16 million people – are under wind chill warnings.
Massachusetts has declared a state of emergency, activating warming centres around the state and closing schools because of the danger of hypothermia.
The sub-zero temperatures have broken several weather records across the US.
