On the 30th of June 2019 there was a vibrant celebration of Māori culture at Wellington's waterfront to mark Matariki, the Māori New Year. This featured fireworks, live music and moving images, kai and korero and a water-based light show called Mana Moana.
Mana Moana was a visual feast that explored New Zealand’s complex history of migration and settlement. A 20 minute selection of curated digital video works by indigenous artists were projected on a 10x15m water screen as an innovative and unique way of sharing their stories.
The narratives explored relationships, journeys and encounters across Te Moana nui a Kiwa, the Pacific Ocean, as a collective of artists seek to invigorate their indigenous Moana relationships.
Artists included Robyn Kahukiwa, Tina Ngata, Dr Johnson Witehira, Rachael Rakena, Louise Potiki Bryant, Dr Karlo Mila, Michael Bridgman, Paddy Free, Warren Maxwell, Michelle Ngamoki, Dayle Takitimu, Rio Hemopo-Hunaki and Rosie Tapsell.
Why Matariki is celebrated in New Zealand.
The star cluster Matariki (also known as the Pleiades) reappears in the dawn sky above Aotearoa New Zealand in late May or early June. Customarily, this was a time to remember the deceased of the past year and to plan for the next year. Today, Matariki has been revived as a celebration of people, culture, language, spirituality, and history. It is a time for whānau (family) and friends to come together to reflect on the past 12 months and look towards the year ahead.
