The Stalingrad Bunker They Sealed for 83 Years - Finally Opened

Описание: On October 19th, 2024, a construction crew in Stalingrad hit something unexpected 4 meters below the street. A concrete wall. Behind it, steel doors. Behind those doors, a German command bunker sealed by Soviet engineers on February 7th, 1943. For 83 years, nobody opened it.

Dr. Yevgeny Karpov led the excavation team. It took 8 days to breach the first door. The air that came out smelled like rust and earth and something else. Something wrong. Inside they found 52 German soldiers who died waiting for rescue that never came.

The timeline doesn't make sense. General Paulus surrendered the 6th Army on February 2nd. The Soviets sealed this bunker on February 7th. But calendar marks scratched into the concrete wall suggest someone survived inside until March 21st. That's 42 days after being sealed. No food. No water. No fresh air. Just darkness.

Room 5 had walls covered in writing. Dated entries that started organized and military. Then they deteriorated. "February 7th: The Russians have sealed the entrances. The ventilation has stopped. The air is getting worse." By February 15th: "We are 11. Something is living in the water tanks." The final entry had no date: "May God forgive us for what we have done to survive."

They found an Enigma machine. The message pad beside it had one word written in German, underlined three times: Kannibalismus. The Russian Ministry of Defense classified that information immediately. Room 7 held eight soldiers who died trying to dig through concrete with bare hands. Room 9 had five Germans locked in a cell. They'd volunteered for isolation. Someone gave them the key to escape. They chose to stay locked up.

52 bodies confirmed. But 53 men were in that bunker based on the records. One body was never found. The excavation concluded November 14th, 2024. The Russian government resealed the bunker. Filled it with concrete. Most of what they found will never be public knowledge.
This is what happened when Soviet forces sealed German positions instead of capturing them. Faster than fighting room to room. Cleaner than taking prisoners. Seal them and move on. Records mention at least 40 other bunker complexes that were sealed the same way. This is the first one anybody opened.
