In 1936, British engineering took a bold step forward with the arrival of the Leyland Octopus — the first eight-wheeled heavy truck designed for road haulage. Built by Leyland Motors, it broke new ground in capacity, strength, and reliability at a time when most lorries were still limited to six wheels.

The Octopus featured four axles, with two steering at the front and twin drive axles at the rear, giving it remarkable stability on rough roads and industrial routes. Power came from a 6-litre Leyland diesel engine producing 97 horsepower and 380 newton-metres (280 lb-ft) of torque, providing the strength to carry up to 12 tonnes (26,000 lb) of cargo across Britain’s challenging terrain.

With its vacuum-assisted mechanical brakes, leaf-spring suspension, and four-speed gearbox with low-range auxiliary drive, the Octopus was a masterpiece of practicality. Drivers praised its steady pulling power and unbreakable reliability — it could haul coal, steel, timber, or machinery day after day without complaint.

Its design — a tall cab, wide stance, and massive eight wheels — gave it the commanding presence of a mechanical giant. The Leyland Octopus soon became a familiar sight on British roads, powering industries and helping rebuild the nation before and after World War II.

Few examples survive today, but restored Octopuses remind us of an era when strength, endurance, and craftsmanship defined heavy transport.
