In probably the most extraordinary footage ever shown on Springwatch, an adder (Vipera berus) sneaks into a reed buntings' (Emberiza schoeniclus) nest, and envenomates and then swallows all of their chicks. An attack of the adder on a bird has never been filmed before. People usually associate rats, mice, voles and shrews with the adder's diet, not bird chicks. It is a very special glimpse into the world of Britain's only venomous snake species, and a very rare one indeed. Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan present this segment.
