This joinery is great for live edge slab table top, the sliding dovetail keep the table top from warping while allowing for seasonal movement, also it can be part of the base design. For example in George Nakashima's trestle table design, this method eliminate the use of screws to secure the table top to the base.
Traditionaly sliding dovetail used in Chinese furnitures are tapered , it gives some margin for error, with this segmented sliding dovetail, accuracy is crucial.
