Take a few minutes to help children calm their nerves and focus with this simple breathing meditation exercise. Easy instructions guide them to take slow breaths while moving their fingers to draw circles and squeeze an eraser.
Just play the video aloud. If you are in a classroom, It is not necessary for students to see the screen. The exercise can be done while sitting at desks or on the floor. You can even do it without erasers, in a pinch.
NOTE: Some children may not be familiar with deep breathing and the sensation will feel strange to them at first. Many children tend to hold their breath when they are feeling stress and it could take a little practice to breathe slowly. Please alert them that they do not have to breathe at the exact pace as the video. They should just try their best, and with practice, it will get easier. Eventually a class of students will learn to synchronize their breathing as a group.
Hands-On Meditation techniques work especially well with young children that are fidgety and struggle with ADD, ADHD or anxiety. Introducing stress management and relaxation techniques to K-12 students provides them with powerful mindfulness tools that they can use throughout their life.
