#FirstString 🏅 Caroline Marks grew up in the spotlight. "From a very young age [there was] a lot of pressure, a lot of expectation. I think that kind of caught up to me." A few years back, Caroline took some time off from surfing to focus on her mental health, but with her friends and family supporting her, she got right back into her groove.
It's not easy to take a step back from your killer career to see the forest for the trees – or the ocean for the waves – regardless of how talented you are, and Caroline was no exception. "Going back to competing, I was like, still very vulnerable and really nervous." But that break may have led her to gold, and she recognizes it.
"After that time off, I ended up having the best year of my career [winning] the world title and the gold medal, so it was pretty crazy to think about. Everything happens for a reason."
