Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán published an open letter accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of endangering Hungary’s energy security, and pressuring Budapest to pick a side between Russia and Ukraine.

The worst of winter may be slowly coming to an end but it’s still cold and Russia continues to attack Ukraine. Overnight, it fired a barrage of drones and missiles at Ukraine's energy sector and railway infrastructure, wounding dozens of people, damaging residential buildings, and triggering fires.

With the EU ban on Russian natural gas looming on the horizon, the U.S. is working hard to supplant Moscow as the leading supplier of fuel for Central and Eastern Europe. This amounts to a seismic shift across the region, which historically has been dependent on Russian energy.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has completed his two-day visit to China, leaving with ten economic deals signed between the two countries. Aware that his visit to China fell on the 4th anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he asked President Xi Jinping to advocate for peace between Russia and Ukraine.
