This lecture was part of the Workshop on "Modelling Diffusive Systems: Theory & Biological Applications (MoDiS)" held at the ESI January 26 to 30, 2026.
In this talk, we enhance the existing model of vegetation patterns by integrating biological factors relevant to plant life. Specifically, we introduce a novel reaction-diffusion model that explores the emergence of spatial patterns influenced by seasonal rainfall and the coexistence of plant species with varying life cycles. This study examines how an annual species impacts the formation and stability of vegetation patterns established by a perennial plant. Furthermore, in order to more accurately describe the heterogeneity and dynamics of plant species, we investigate the effects of different modelling approaches (from stochastic to individual-based) on pattern formation.
