John Hardy (Eva Davis, 1924). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey (guitar) & Alan Sillars (banjo & vocals), Columbus, OH (1986). The first recorded version of "John Hardy" is believed to be Eva Davis in 1924 (B. Powell, wvpublic.org, 2017); it's an American folk song about a railroad worker who was convicted of murdering Thomas Drews and was hanged in 1894 (Wheeling Daily Register, Oct. 13, 1893; Wheeling Daily Register, Jan. 19, 1894). Many artists in the country and bluegrass community have recorded the song; however, no version has ever made it onto any of the Billboard charts (B. Powell, wvpublic.org, 2017).
