Описание: In an exclusive interview on India Today Global, Sital Kalantry, Professor of Law at Seattle University, analyzed the legal shift in US trade policy after the Supreme Court ruled President Donald Trump's previous global tariffs illegal. Following the ruling, the Trump administration invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose a new 10% global tariff effective February 24, 2026. Sital Kalantry noted that while Trump mentioned a 15% rate, official documents currently cite 10%. She explained that Section 122 allows the President to impose tariffs for 150 days without congressional approval to address balance-of-payment deficits. Regarding the impact on New Delhi, Sital Kalantry stated, 'Overall, this is good news for India,' as many Indian exports now face lower duties than before. However, she advised Indian negotiators to 'wait and watch,' noting that the 150-day window creates a temporary landscape and that the US President retains other legal tools, such as Section 232, to impose higher tariffs if trade talks do not progress favorably.
