It has been 4 years since I did my last Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM lens video in Hokkaido. Finally, I got to go back to Japan to do my reviews. As Japan has always been my favourite country to visit and also review.

On this trip, I brought 3 lenses with me for the review. But in this video we focus on the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 first. And I gotta say, this is a really nice all round lens. And with the ASP-C crop, you are able to cover from 20mm (Full Frame) to the 60mm (APS-C Mode). Personally, I would rather go for the Tamron 20-40mm than the Sony 24-70mm. First, the 24-70mm is not wide enough for Tokyo. Especially the lens has such a long distance. It makes the lens almost like 26mm wish for the wide end. Second, the weight. The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 only weights at 365g. Trust me, when you carry so much gear with you. Every gram counts.

So the lens performs really well. Super sharp image. The only thing I would say is, the video auto focus is slightly slower than the Sony lenses. But that’s only if you want the camera to find the focus for you. But once it locks into the subject. It works really well.

Over all, I think this Tamron is a beautiful lens. But ofcoz I wish this lens was 20-60mm rather than 20-40mm. But I guess if they did, the price and the weight would have been a lot more.

Things I learnt in Japan
Shooting in Japan is super fun. But also can be very challenging. Because you gotta be very careful about the lighting. When I was shooting the Shibuya crossing scene. (FE 14mm Review) There were about 3 to 4 hours the sun just hitting half of the building. Before I didn’t care so much, I just work with it. But now I can’t just leave it and hope that I could recover the highlights and shadows in post. So I waited for couple of hours then go back and do the shots again. I mean that’s only when you have time to go back and re-shoot it. Sometime you can’t even go back as you have next location to go.
