Joey Gallo known as Crazy Joe was a New York mobster who rose to power in the nineteen sixties as a leader of the Gallo crew during a violent internal war with the Colombo crime family. Unlike traditional Mafia figures he openly challenged leadership recruited outside the Italian circle and moved freely in Harlem working with non Italian criminals. Gallo mixed crime with intellect spending time with writers artists and celebrities while openly criticizing the Mafia structure. His rebellious style made him unpredictable and dangerous even to his own allies. In nineteen seventy two he was shot and killed during his forty third birthday dinner in Manhattan cementing his reputation as one of the most unconventional and disruptive figures in Mafia history
