Working with concrete is a lot easier when you have the right tools for the job! Here are some cement tools you need to know about as you tackle your next concrete project.
• Concrete mixing hoe
• Mortar box
• Mixing barrel
• Metal float
• Screed board (2 x 6 or 2 x 4)
• Edger
• Jointer
• Steel finishing trowel
• Fine bristle broom
Explanation of terms:
A concrete mixing hoe is similar to a garden hoe, but it has holes in the blade to facilitate the flow of concrete and water through the hoe as you mix your concrete. It helps you to mix the concrete and water faster than with a solid blade hoe or shovel. Speed is desired because concrete needs to be thoroughly mixed before it has time to set.
A mortar box is a large, metal pan that you can use to mix concrete in before transferring the mixed concrete to the form of your project. A wheelbarrow is a popular alternative to the mortar box.
A mixing barrel is a plastic barrel with interior fins and a screw on lid. It's designed to mix concrete by the method of measuring ingredients, loading the barrel with the correct amounts of concrete and water, securing the lid, and rolling the barrel on the ground to facilitate mixing. This is an effort saving alternative to mixing concrete with a hoe or shovel.
A metal float is a hand tool used to finish a concrete surface. It is a flat, smooth rectangle of metal with a handle. Smoothing the surface of the concrete with a metal float will give you a smooth finish. You can use a wooden float for a finish that will be slightly less smooth.
A screed board is a very straight section of 2 x 6 or 2 x 4 wood used to level the surface of concrete in a form by skimming off excess concrete mixture.
An edger is a hand tool designed to help you round the edge of freshly poured concrete. Edgers are flat metal pieces with a rounded, down turned lip on one edge and a handle on top. Use the lip edge of the edger to form the rounded off edge of your concrete project as you do your finishing while the concrete is still wet. You may need to let the mixture set just a little before it will be thick enough to get permanent results from your finishing tools.
A jointer is a hand tool that is used for making grooves or control joints in concrete to control cracking. A control joint is a continuous vertical joint built into concrete projects to control crack development resulting from stress or weathering. The joints are intended to provide very slight expansion movement to give the project some flexibility before actually cracking under structural stress.
A steel finishing trowel is just like a metal float except that the rectangular metal piece, used for smoothing, is thinner and very slick. It is used to create very slick concrete surfaces. Keep in mind that concrete walkways that are finished to have a slick surface are dangerous and not recommended. A steel finishing trowel is best used on a wall project.
A fine bristle broom is a common broom or a push broom with stiff, fine bristles. It is used to lightly brush the top of a concrete walkway project just prior to the final stages of setting so that the resulting surface has a rough texture. The tiny broom grooves are pleasing in appearance and significantly enhance the safety of a concrete walkway.
