Were ploughing here with a Y. L. Plough, a Yorkshire Light is its name, a Ransom Yorkshire Light. Were ploughing it so we can try and get all the weeds buried, there is a lot of weeds on the top and were trying to get them ploughed underneath for good weed control. Also weve put a lot of muck on it, so weve put a lot of fertility into the ground for the roots next spring, and were trying to do a tidy job, plough it straight, even, all the furrows the same size, uniformity, thats all the furrows the same size and depth, and try and bury all the weeds and trash. You take a pride in the job, I enjoy doing it, but I take a pride in it as well. Its just a general purpose type of ploughing, so you can do anything with it, you can drill corn on the top of it, or you can leave it through the winter for the frost and the weather elements to break it down for a good seed bed for your roots in the spring.

Its good land, lightish land, sandy gravelly sort of land, but its quite a steep hill for the horses to pull up so theyve got to be very fit and strong to pull up a hill like this but the beauty of it is that when they come to the steep part they just seem to drop a gear and dig in and plough away quietly, not struggling at it, they just drop a gear and plough quite content, calmly, and its better for them, and for the plough and for me.
