Montenegro shares the same Adriatic coastline as Croatia — same ancient stone, same impossibly clear water — but costs roughly half as much with a fraction of the crowds. It's one of the most compelling holiday destinations in Europe right now, and this guide covers the entire country from coast to canyon.
The journey begins in the Bay of Kotor, where a UNESCO-listed old town sits beneath a fortress reached by 1,350 stone steps. Nearby Perast offers a boat ride to a man-made island fishermen have been building since the fifteenth century. Above the bay, the village of Njeguši serves Montenegro's famous smoked ham at family smokehouses for under twelve euros, and the Njegoš Mausoleum crowns Mount Lovćen with views stretching to Albania.
Along the coast, Budva's medieval peninsula, the postcard island of Sveti Stefan, and Ulcinj's thirteen-kilometer sand beach reveal Montenegro's range. Inland, Skadar Lake delivers pelican colonies, lily-covered channels, and tastings of Vranac — a dark red wine nearly impossible to find outside the country.
The final stop is Durmitor National Park, where the Tara River Canyon drops 1,300 meters — deeper than anything else in Europe — and glacial lakes shift between emerald and black beneath 2,500-meter peaks. Rafting runs fifty to eighty euros for a half-day.
Best visited May through September. A week covers the highlights. Montenegro remains one of Europe's last underpriced coastal countries, though that window is narrowing.
