STORYLINE
Early morning voters are turning out at voting precincts across half the United States as they decide the leadership of the world's most powerful country.
In the storm battered Staten Island, voters cast their ballots in a makeshift polling station lit by the battery powered lamp.
The campaigns of both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have long assumed that the heavily Democratic region would support Obama, but voters were taking special election shuttles from storm-hit areas and voting by affidavit from any polling place they could reach after officials put emergency measures in place.
In the battleground state of Ohio, voters were lined up outside polling places in Columbus.
The queues came despite nearly two weeks of early voting opportunities throughout the state of Ohio.
Ohio is expected to be neck and neck and may not be determined until after Tuesday's polls close.
In Miami, voters also lined up early to beat the commuter rush.
Nearly a dozen amendments to the state constitution are also on the ballot including a measure that would give families of fallen heroes property tax exemptions.
After months of campaigning and billions of dollars spent in the battle, Obama and Romney were in a virtual nationwide tie ahead of Tuesday's election.
Obama appeared to have a slight edge, however, in some of the key swing states such as Ohio that do not vote reliably Democratic or Republican.
Under the US system, the winner of the presidential election is not determined by the nationwide popular vote but in state-by-state contests.
The candidate who wins a state - with Maine and Nebraska the exceptions - is awarded all of that state's electoral votes, which are apportioned based on representation in Congress.
