Bessie Coleman spent her short life as a living example that people of color could go after their dreams. She gave speeches and showed films of her daring, stunt flying tricks in churches, theaters, and schools that were open to African Americans and whites alike.

Her goal in life was to inspire women to become pilots and to encourage African American men & women to do the same. She worked hard to get her own plan and had plans to start an aviation school in the U.S. for any and all to attend.

She learned several languages including French in order to obtain a license to fly. Since the US would not give her even a chance, Bessie Coleman went to France and other parts of Europe to get the credentials as well as the training to fly.

She learned that in order to make a living as a civilian aviator she would have to become a "barnstorming" stunt flier, performing dangerous tricks in airplanes for paying audiences. She did this successfully for 5 years, traveling across the country doing exhibition flying shows as a well as showing up a venues to give lectures and encouragement to all who would listen.

Bessie Coleman never did manage to establish her own flight school. On April 30, 1926, Bessie Coleman died while performing a stunt in one of her air shows.
