Hi everyone, and welcome to another piano review video at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. Today, we’re taking a look at C. Bechstin’s Academy A160 baby grand piano.
One of the smallest premium baby grand pianos on the market, the A160 produces a lot more tone than what is typical of a small grand piano, and boasts both clarity and warmth. This piano is completely hand made in Germany, and is part of Bechstein’s second best quality line.
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support!
Piano Sound:
While Bechstein’s consistency across all of their pianos are well known, the actual differences in tonal characteristics are quite pronounced between the various models of their line. The A160 has a super immediate attack that almost reminds me of playing the Concert 8, as opposed to the typical grand piano tone that has a lot of room effect.
As you play the instrument, you might notice some slightly uneven cabinet resonance, as opposed to the Concert Class L167 which is more precise. This may not be noticable to some, but it’s worth mentioning to help understand the differences between the A160 and L167.
Many small grands seriously lack clarity and definition in the bass register, and while this is the case on the A160 if you really push the volume, other volume levels actually sound like a much larger piano in the bass.
In terms of some design specifics, something remarkable is that Bechstein makes their own hammers, one of the few piano manufacturer’s still doing this, and every single model has its own hammer made specifically for that piano. This goes a long in helping to achieve the distinct character each Bechstein piano displays, and the A160 is no exception to this.
The A160 uses a capo bar, as well as agraffes. The specs overall are fairly typical for what you’ll find in high end German pianos, but not as advanced as what you’ll get in the Concert Series Bechstein, or a Fazioli for example, with extra rim laminations, tapered soundboard etc.
The soundboard is made of high elevation Alpine solid spruce, with very tight grains indicative of slow growth spruce.
Piano Action:
The A160 uses Bechstein’s Silver Action, which is the second best action they build, right under the Gold Action. Differences between the Silver and Gold action include more regulation and a higher level of tolerances with the Gold Action, while the actual materials and geometry feel the same. With that being said, a good technician should be able to spend some time on a Silver Action and get it playing at the same level as the Gold Action.
Overall, while this is actually a fairly light action, due to how resonant the instrument as a whole is, it can lead to the perception that the action is lighter than it actually is. We weighed this action out and it’s actually a fairly standard weight as far as baby grands go.
Summary:
This is a piano that produces both grand piano level of dynamic range, but with the effect of an extremely intimate attack, which I personally love. If you’ve got the budget, the L167 is going to produce a superior musical experience, but for half the price, the A160 boasts some serious value.
Thank you for watching! Long live the piano!
