This is a short improvisation over a non-diatonic chord progression:
D – A – C – G (I – V – ♭VII – IV).
I started by laying down the progression with open chords and power chords to give it a solid rock foundation, then improvised a short lead over it.
While soloing, I consciously tried to keep E as a recurring melodic anchor, letting it sit across multiple chords instead of strictly chasing chord tones. That helped the solo feel more connected and singable over the progression, especially with the ♭VII (C major) adding a slightly modal flavour.
This wasn’t pre-written — I looped the progression a few times and played based on feel, phrasing, and resolution rather than speed or complexity. The focus was on melody, space, and letting notes breathe.
Gear-wise, this was a simple setup, keeping things raw and direct so the harmony and phrasing stay front and centre.
Would love to hear your thoughts — especially if you enjoy non-diatonic progressions, modal colours, or melodic improvisation.
