Sometimes you will get questions that are just plain confusing and difficult. There’s also the conundrum of what to do when you don’t understand a question. In this video, we’ll go through some ‘bad’ questions and go through some strategies. The questions we will use for this exercise are examples of confusing or misleading questions that come up.

And they do come up. Rather than complain, you also need to develop a strategy in order to answer them. It is tough because: “an understanding of one’s personality” seems to be referring to us when clearly it isn’t meant to. To answer this think about whom the ‘one’ they are referring to is, and state who you believe they are in your introduction.

It is tough because: This isn’t a bad question as much as it requires you to know your techniques. You also need to work out what is meant by ‘tension’. In this case, you can ‘guess’ based on the wording used. i.e. If the climax is the top, then the falling action must be coming down. Note that this isn’t always possible, however. It is essential you go through some checklists of text and language techniques every once in a while. It is tough because: ‘latitude’ and ‘perspectives being embraced’ don’t refer to anything specific.

In this case, you need to do a bit of the work yourself – in the introduction make a connection between those terms and your implied meaning. Remember: vague questions don’t have vague answers. You must show that you are able to be specific – even if the question you are given is not. It is tough because: This is almost deliberately confusing.

You have to split up the question yourself and do your best to work it out. For instance, ‘the author’s style is facilitated by its context’ one could argue is referring to a ‘style of the era’. ‘The influence this has on our understanding of its world’ suggests that the author's style and era can tell us about the world.

This strategy is not without risk. You must rephrase the question and make your answer to it clear. In an exam, not much. Just keep calm and do your best. If it is for an assignment, speak to your teacher and politely ask them to explain. Knowing the question is almost as important as how you write your answer – so you really need to be clear on what it is asking.
