On June 14, 1846, a small group of around 30 rebels, led by William B. Ide, raised a flag featuring a bear and a star at Sonoma, California. This iconic flag became the symbol of their revolt and the emerging California Republic. The bear on the flag represented the region's abundant wildlife, while the lone star symbolized the rebels' aspirations for independence.

The Bear Flag Revolt was motivated by a combination of factors. The American settlers in California faced challenges under Mexican rule, including land disputes, cultural differences, and political tensions. Additionally, the ongoing conflict between the United States and Mexico heightened the desire among the settlers for self-governance and protection of their interests.

The revolt was relatively short-lived, lasting only about a month. On July 9, 1846, American forces under the command of Commodore John D.
