A hernia in a child is a bulge from an organ or tissue pressing through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle, most commonly seen as a visible swelling in the groin or belly button. Symptoms include a bulge that appears or gets larger when the child cries, coughs, or strains, and may disappear when they lie down. Umbilical hernias often go away on their own, but inguinal hernias usually require surgery to prevent complications, especially because they don't close on their own.
1. A noticeable bulge or swelling in the groin, scrotum, or belly button
2. The bulge may be more visible when the child is crying, straining, or coughing
3. Discomfort or pain around the affected area
4. Irritability or fussiness in infants
Umbilical hernias: Many close on their own by age 4 or 5. Surgery is typically only needed if it doesn't close or causes problems.
Inguinal hernias: Usually require surgery because they don't close on their own and can lead to complications. The surgery involves pushing the protruding tissue back and closing the opening.
Hiatal hernias: Treatment depends on the severity and can range from managing symptoms to surgery.
