Описание: With mothers day coming up, I am reminded of a question that was asked to me during the Q&A session of Margazhi Maha Utsavam (aired on Jaya TV on 26th December 2009). I was asked by the interviewer, “Now that you are a well-known singer, how does your mother (your first Guru) feel about your success?” I replied, “When I was young, I was not sure about taking up music as my life’s pursuit. My mother was perhaps keen on me taking it up, but she never put any pressure on me for it. She disciplined me, without being hard on me. Her approach with me was firm but tactful, making sure that I would learn to love music. I was not passionate about music as a child; that passion came to me much later in life. But when it finally did come and I chose music as my calling, my mum could only witness my success from above. She had reached her heavenly abode by then. She had sown the seeds, but couldn’t enjoy the fruits of the resulting success in her physical presence."

*About Aruna Sairam*
Aruna Sairam (Padma Shri) is a Carnatic vocalist, composer, collaborator, humanitarian, and speaker. In addition to her performances in India, Aruna has taken Carnatic music to the global arena, at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently Vice Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, she was appointed in 2008 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as Advisor to the Department of Culture. Aruna works towards the musical education of underprivileged students, through the Nadayogam Trust, which she founded in 2011. Aruna is grateful for the training she received under her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and the legendary T. Brinda, and the mentorship from several masters throughout her musical journey. Her music erased geographic borders when she was the first to incorporate Abhang, a Western Indian musical form, into a traditional, South Indian concert.
