Curating the Performing Arts in the Age of Performance
with Shannon Jackson, response by Rob Bailis
Shannon Jackson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Arts + Design, UC Berkeley
Rob Bailis, Associate Director, Cal Performances, UC Berkeley
Partly as a response to the desire for participatory models, museums and other arts organizations have begun to incorporate ‘performance’ into their curatorial programming. How is this contemporary interest in performance affecting historic performing arts organizations — theaters, dance companies, symphonies, and presenting organizations? How are categories such as dance, theater, and music maintained or altered as we welcome new experiments? How are performing artists thinking about the goals and techniques of their medium?

Co-taught by Shannon Jackson, Associate Vice Chancellor of the Arts + Design; Natasha Boas, independent curator, art historian and critic; and Eric Siegel, Director of the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, Arts + Design Wednesdays @ BAMPFA will explore this theme with some of the most innovative and incisive writers, artists and scholars of our time.
Arts + Design Wednesdays @ BAMPFA is a public lecture series embedded within a Big Ideas undergraduate course. The series exposes students and the public to a range of creative forms across the visual arts, performance, literature, film, and design. It introduces students and the community to our campus’s major museums, presenters, and academic departments, as well as to select Bay Area arts organizations and regional partners.
